My sister´s children are Ella and Lily-not nicknames, just their names.

We want to name a girl Eliana, but call her Ellie.

What do you think-are we copying, or does this sound completely different that her children´s names?

You and your sister are family, are you not?

So I think copy or not, this is the most appropriate name that carries all the three kids together.

They are all sisters anyway who will probably make each other proud of their acheivements in life someday.

And thats the time when you and your sister will hold each others hands like a pair of lovable kids and look upon them with appreciation and love which every mother wishes to do for their grown up babies.

It sounds similar when you use the nickname Ellie, but the name Eliana is different from them, and it is also very beautiful. It's up to you. These days I always hear the nickname Emmie, but it's short for different names (Emma, Emily, Emmalyne). If you love the name, use it. I'm sure your girls will not be confused amongst family.

If you wan Eliana and Call her Ellie go for it

It depends on how often they will see each other. Will they be in the same school, or in the same activities? Because that might be hard.

Also, will they have the same last name? I know it's unlikely, but is so, then definitely don't do it.

I think it's sweet, but if they are always going to be together, there is going to be a lot of tied tongues and confusion, I think.

It's similar, but the name of your child is your choice. My cousins have children Brendan, Brady, and Ronan. I was going to name my son Braydon, which is very similar to theirs. I ended up liking Jaden better, but it's the same situation. I like Eliana. I say if it's what you like, who cares if it's similar to family.

They're lovely names, and no--you're definitely not copying.

In both my generation and my nephews'/nieces' generation, we have several cousins with _identical_ first names. In our family, this has always been fun--I think there's even a special bond between big John and little John, for example.

But--do you think your sister will be upset? That's the only reason I can think of for reconsidering your naming plans.

Yes, they are too similar.... Why would you want your child to have a name so close to your sister's children's names??
