I am using a cable modem. I can use it for about half a hour before it gives me a limited or no connectivity pop up. in that case i have to restart my computer. Is there anyway i can fix this problem because its aggravating when i surf the internet and have to restart the computer just to continue. HELP! when the computer runs i get an IP address of 86 but when it doesn't work and has limited or no connectivity i get an IP of 169.

You may have a bad cable or your ethernet port is going bad.
The 169.x.x.x IP is a Microsoft default IP address there is a logical name for that IP but I can't remember it at this time. Just best to know if you see the 169.x.x.x IP it isn't going to get to the internet.
Check that the cable is plugged in all the way. If it is connected solidly to both ports on both ends and you are still having problem then check into a new cable. If the cable isn't doing the trick buy a new Ethernet card and install it.
Shouldn't cost more than 30 dollars total. Newegg.com is a good place to buy the parts you need.

Is your Dell directly connected to the cable? My Dell3000, which is direct connect - extremely fast and so far no problem. My Dell2400, upstairs, get a low connection. Sometimes temporarily shuts me out.
Re: IP address -- try
Start
Run
ipconfig renew (that's ipconfig space renew)
see if that helps
To check your IP, go to www.whatismyip.com

Open up your network connection and go to support, click repair. Maybe XP will do the hard work.
If not,
Reboot your modem, router, disable the network connection.
Turn on the modem, router. then enable the network connection.
Also that last guy, if the cable was broke it would either work or it wouldn't. IT WOULD NOT JUST HALF WORK.
*sigh
Good luck.

use a static ip instead of dhcp and set that to x.x.x.86, substituting your first 3 numbers with your defaults. If that doesn't work, try messing with the router settings to keep the link up longer.

Check your LAN settings? Check your ip settings, there should be only one setting and find out what is your current origin where your computer accesses the Internet, through your network?

Hmm.. that could be a few of a few things.
Try hooking the internet up to another computer and seeing how long that lasts, if it lasts like it should, it is a problem with your pc. From there I can help you with whats next.

This sounds like a Q for the tech support of your internet provider.
Do you have another computer you could use to test the line?
