Sadly, some people let the media feed them their knowledge of islam.
I've yet to run across someone claiming muslim women were oppressed, and they'd gained their information because they knew SOOOOO many muslim women who told them that.
The media is a funny tool. I am from the US, and i can't seem to turn on the news without hearing about some white girl thats gotten raped by her boyfriend, killed by her husband... but that doesn't make me think "oh, all white women are raped and adused by their boyfriends..."
I don't know a SINGLE unhappy muslim woman. and i'd be willing to bet i know TONS more muslim women than a non muslim...

I have a Muslim female friend who i've know for about five years. She just recently started wearing the head garment. But, my thing is with the full outfits where you can't even see the face at all. I don't understand the purpose. I've heard it's because men can't control their sexual urges and so the women must be covered. Please explain the reason, if that's not the case. I personally would not choose to wear that garment. It can't be comfortable and in the summer months, it can't be comfortable. I'm curious to know what the difference is between the women who don't wear garments, the ones who just wear the head garments and the ones who cover 100% of the bodies.
I did see a story where several Muslim women did say they pretty much are made to wear these by their men. I believe them. Especially when a woman can be killed by the men in her family if she dates or does anything against her family's wishes.
I know this to be true because I have dated Middle Eastern men who have told me about this, and I have read several stories about honor killings and what not.
What's up with that, by the way?

I got my views on Muslim women from Muslim men. Talking about how the way western women dress is just asking to be raped and how Muslim women wear these clothes to not tempt men. That paired with what I hear from the news.
If a Muslim woman is not wearing these garments because she is forced to, is there another reason I am not seeing? Enlighten me.

Yes, I've lot of Muslim female friends and they dress just like everyone else. But of course it depends on a place where they in. If they're at the beach, they will wear suitable swimming costumes, if they're in cold climate, they will wear lot of thick dresses to make them warm.

I suspect that most people get their views from the media and as the most enlightened amongst us will know, it's not the best place to find the facts....

My views come from being in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq, and I know what I have seen. Not all muslim women wear that stuff everywhere, depends where you are at. From what I have seen, muslim women are on the bottom of the heap, as regards to respect.

I know several Muslim women who are university students. They seem genuinely happy, and content with themselves, which is more than I can say for many people.
