My pick would be Johnson. Unlike today's crybaby pitchers Johnson would pitch complete games regardless of stupid pitch counts & come back to do it again 2 days later.Meanwhile Beckett will probably cry whine & plead to get out after throwing 80 pitches. Johnson is the perfect example of how great pitching was back then compared to the spoiled wusses of today.

Nothing to do with being bitter Kris. it has somethign to do with today's pitchers are wimps & are nothing compared to the pitchers of yesteryear period. Young Johnson Matthewson are real pitchers. they would pitch complete games without whining & then pitch 2 days later. Today's pitchers are whiners spoiled & cry about wanting to get out after throwing 80 pitches. That goes for pitchers like Beckett Pedro Martinez Etc.

Did you simply pick Beckett because he's likely to win the Cy Young? Because you can put anyone in his place and the result will likely be the same.
Now, anyone could get hot on any given day. However, the chances are, given offenses of equal caliber, Johnson will win against most pitchers most of the time.
He was simply amazing and when you consider that he played on teams that were worse than the ones Ryan played on, in an era were there weren't a ton of strikeouts, that he could win 400+ games, get a shutout in a quarter of them, rack up 3700 K's (a record that would last into the 80's), he would definitely be my pick for the all-time top pitcher.

Yeah, if Beckett pitched as much as Johnson he'd have a dead arm.
On the other hand, Walter Johnson is totally dead.
I think that would give Josh the edge.
Seriously though, The Big Train may have been the best pitcher in the history of baseball. THAT gives him the edge in any pitching matchup you could come up with!

Sounds like you might be a bitter Yankees fan, hating on Beckett for dominating you in the World Series in 2003.
Let it go, it'll be OK.
OBVIOUSLY Walter Johnson is a better pitcher than Josh Beckett. The only 2 pitchers actively pitching you could make a debate for being on Johnson's level are Clemens and Maddux. Maddux might even be a stretch.

It's a different era, of course. In Johnson's day, pitchers didn't throw so hard to every single batter. They tended to pace themselves more, because they knew they were going to pitch complete games barring a meltdown. Guys of that era picked their spots. Beckett knows he's only going 110 pitches or so, and there are few easy outs these days -- particularly in a league with the DH.
The better comparison for your purposes is probably Johnson vs. Roger Clemens at their peaks. I'd take Clemens in that game.

Never would an old timer win over a current player....different time and period....bring Johnson to todays's game and he would not last....and if Beckett went back in time with the same skills as today...they would not touch him!.....these questions are impossible to be fair to the old timers...maybe someone a little closer like Gibson or Koufax against Beckett....even then I don't think they would have beat him....he is just too strong!

I'm hoping Verlander and the Tigers win. Haren isn't an easy challenge by any means, however. BQ: James Shields BQ: Felix Hernandez vs Roy Halladay, the reigning Cy Young award winners of AL and NL, respectively.

I love Beckett, ever since he was a Marlin, but I refuse to say he is better than the Big Train

Johnson by far. No comparison. That would be like comparing Babe Ruth to David Eckstein for homerun power
