As banking laws are different in every country the best thing to do is to call your local bank and ask when a personal check become a stale check. In my country, personal checks are good only for 6 months from the date issued before they become stale . Managers/cashiers checks are different with 1 year effectivity.

The Banking Laws in India provide for a cheque to be encashed within a period of six months from the date posted on the cheque after which they lose their validity.

Most do have a limit , some as short as 60 days .
Holding them is pointless , Why would anyone do that ?
If you are holding one , deposit it today And
If it is old , request the teller advise you if it is still good .
