I have a question regarding copyrights and how they apply to a product that is changed to a new use. As an example, could you take a Coke bottle and make it in to a lamp or flowerpot(or anything else for that matter(leaving the bottle and label intact) and resell it without Coca-Cola suing you?

Your question has nothing to do with copyright. It is a trademark issue. One or two items & Coke won't bother. If you start a business that depends on use of Coke's trademark labels & bottle shapes they will probably come down on you.

The bottle and lettering is a trademark, at least the lettering is. You can read about it at the link. What companies choose to stop varies. Sometimes all you have to do is ask them. They might consider it advertising and give you permission while going after some other form viewed as misuse and libelous,

Copyrights are different.

As complex as law is you would need an Attorney for a more definitive answer. I would go to one in person!

No. The company owns all that goes with the product. The Coke bottle shape is registered/copyrighted also. Harley Davidson "owns" the shield shape that frames their logo. Harley and Disney are two companies that will search you out for copyright infringements. Harley offers rewards for turning in offenders.

That is a grey area, but I doubt Coke would mind and changing their bottle into a lamp base would constitute a new item... but if you are planning to do this kind of thing you either need to talk to your lawyer or MOVE TO CHINA...
