The acetyl group of acetyl-CoA is transferred to oxaloacetate. This forms citrate (citric acid). Citrate is the form of citric acid with the hydrogens disassociated, and is how it exists at cellular pH. The enzyme in this step of the citric acid cycle is citrate synthase.
