I'm not sure what to think. I've heard that this high school had a racial problem, that it escalated into some white kids who beat up a black kid, and then some black kids beat up a white kid . . . and now the black kids are up for attempted murder (since downgraded to assault.)

People seem upset because the first set didn't get into trouble and the second did, but no one seems to be saying how badly either kid was beaten, or whether there were aggravating factors during either fight like racial slurs, verbal threats to kill before or during the fight, etc. I can certainly envision scenarios in which the attempted murder charges would be justified in one fight but not the other. If the school administration issued a general warning (or even made an "unpublicized" decision) after the first fight that that sort of behavior wouldn't be tolerated, that's another wrinkle.

One thing that's really made me mad has been people saying that one of the six is a star athlete and therefore doesn't deserve the treatment he's getting. I don't think high school athletes deserve special treatment at all . . . if anything, they should be held to a higher standard. At the very least, those scholarship offers should have been rescinded as soon as he got into any fight, much less ganging up on one student.

Hanging the Nooses was absolutely wrong and there should have been some kind of reprecussion for the kids who did that. Now six boys beat up one guy? Yeah- there needs to be reprecussions for that also. Attempted murder and hanging an noose in a tree that did not harm anyone are completely different and should be treated differently.

I think that there is way too much coverage on it, and that our legal system is erred, because of the variables such as the judge, his or her standpoints, and the demographics of the area that you live in. Racism in America is not uncommon, or limited to one race. I think all parties involved were in the wrong, each case should be considered on their own. The whole thing is snowballing into a nasty national tragedy, creating further division of races.

I think that if there was no law to charge the children that hung the nooses but ther eis a law against beating a person into unconsciousness then you charge the beaters PERIOD! There is no DOUBLE STANDARD, one set of children broke the law(as it is written) the other's did not. Horse crap! Is what I say to all the protesters.

i think they're being blackballed because of their race.

Did they beat up a white kid? YES. Do they deserve to be punished for that? YES.

Do i honestly think this crime was attempted murder, they were honestly trying to kill this kid, and they should face a couple decades in prison? NOT IN THE LEAST.

I'm not going down there to march or anything, but i won't turn my face from it and pretend this isn't a racial issue either. Denying it doesn't make it untrue, it just keeps you ignorant to what's still going on in this country today...

My thoughts are that children live what they learn. I'm tired of racism and hate. We are all connected and we need to get along. No race is better than another race. We are all created equal and the only thing that makes us different is the choices that we make.

if they beat that white kid, they need to be punished for that action.

similarly, those kids that hung those nooses on the tree need to be punished as well.
