Should do some research into child neglect, just so they understand the true meaning and depths of child neglect before they bandy the accusation about so flippantly. It appears to be the last straw they can clutch in order to justify their nasty vitriol and vilification of the McCanns. Making a mistake in believing that their little girl was safe whilst they dined is not my understanding of true child neglect or abuse. Stupid/Naive though the McCanns may have been I don't see it as abuse or neglect if the truth be told. Do you believe they say it in almost every posting because the have nothing else to justify their hate campaign?

neil: I wasn't going to bother, but I changed my mind: It is ridiculous to leap to assumptions such as: I don't know there are trolls (I think that's a stupid word) on both sides. The language I use is English, I don't swear at people or make silly comments such as: Grow up little girl (to grandmothers) whilst objecting to perceived aspersion, that would make me look foolish and defintely hypocritical. I stand by my words

Skiddo, Natasha, my thoughts exactly, in any given city or street on any given day a child will be roaming the streets, afraid and unable to go home. Hungry and cold, or homeless, it is these children who are in need of urgent help from social services and their limited funds. Social services should focus their attention and finances on this real neglect, their time and money should not be used paying lawyers to prosecute the McCanns. Get real.

It is a hate campaign of course even though in this same question it is denied, they want to hate but it is "not a hate campaign" sheesh.

They have twisted the whole history by constantly repeating "they left the children alone" interestingly saying this is not the real aim. What the haters are trying to do and I admit with some success is to distort the picture in the minds of readers to infer and even say outright that the McCanns killed their daughter, yes this is the real aim.

It is a hate campaign based on envy, mean losers have latched onto a mistake by the McCanns ( for Christ's sake they are broken hearted about this mistake) but still the hate rolls in , over and over again, literally 1000s of times.

I really have the creeps about these people and their vindictive nasty unforgiving gloating. OK in simple words they make me sick

I would not call it neglect in the form it has been interpreted on here. Very naive to say the least to think a child would be safe. It is not something I would do. There could be a fire or an accident. OK, they were checking every half hour to make sure they were OK but still not something I would do. As has been pointed out, this is the sort of service you receive in some hotels and holiday complexes. So obviously some people must do it on occasion.
Some people have more than one room when they are on holiday. So they children could still have been on their own in the room while the parents slept in another. Therefore the child could still have been taken through the night.

There are loads of latch key kids out there who have to take care of themselves until parents come home from work. Are they termed as neglected or abused. How old do people consider a child should be, to be able to take care of themselves?

I do agree that there is no need to answer every posting with their retorts of neglect and abuse. It is well known that they left the kids in the apartment on their own. It would probably be preferable that they said something of significance to the question rather the same boring comment or say nothing at all.

well good point, but they still broke the law. HOWEVER....... they have been interviewed by social services...so really in that respect they HAVE been treated like any other individual would have been. social services will have made their own decision by now as to their position with this situation. so it HAS been dealt with according to the law. A point to remember is that after all of this has disappeared from the news....some time from now, the reporters will have moved onto something else, and the mccanns will be haunted by the memory of what happened in portugal. and that is just unthinkable for any parent.

Whilst I agree with you that some people on here have gone too far in their hatred and accusations towards the McCanns, I still think they were wrong to leave three very young children alone in a strange apartment while they were out eating and drinking. I just got back from Majorca last night, and each evening families with young children were out enjoying themselves in restaurants and bars, as a family group. In Europe young kids are welcome everywhere, so there is no excuse to leave them alone. Also, why didn't they use the child-minding service provided, or, if they didn't want to do that, as they were part of a large group, could they not have taken turns each night to mind all the children. They have neglected their duty, as parents, to protect their children from harm.

Yes I do. I'm astonished that they really think it would be a good use of Social Services time and resources to investigate the McCanns for setting up a child checking rota on holiday rather than using the resort staff to do the same.

I think Social Servies should be looking after some of the unfed, unwashed, and clearly unloved kids you see trailing around inner cities. I think they should investigate the parents of children who don't have clean clothes or decent shoes to wear and get ill from the poor food and hygiene they have at home. I think they should be keeping a closer eye on kids whose parents have mental illness. I think they should be spreading the word about the importance of loving relationships and contraception to stop kids of 13 getting pregnant.

I do not think they should take well cared for healthy children away from their already devastated and mourning parents.

Agree wholeheartedly. It hacks me off no end to hear this "neglect" card played ad nauseam when those doing it appear entirely ignorant of the reality of neglect.

The McCanns misjudged the risks. It was foolish and, perhaps, careless of them to do what they did but their intention, I believe, was to care for their children. Real neglect, in my book, is something different.

Of course, I still shake my head in bewilderment when, as keeps happening, people use the fact that they "neglected" the kids as evidence that they killed Madeleine.

Freethinker, I agree with people need to do research but I think alot of people on both sides of the argument need to take a breath and really think about what they are saying.

I don't consider myself stupid, but I have absolutely no idea what happened to this poor girl. Like alot of folk I have read articles, watched and listened to news, listened to others opinions, and I am clueless.

At the end of this sorry saga, I do hope anyone that needs to be brought to book will, no matter the charge.

Until then, I've nto a clue.

They are a nasty bunch of hate campaigners, no evidence of murder exists simply because if it did the McCanns would be in jail awaiting trial. The tragi-comical Portuguese police invented evidence ALL of which has been shown to be porky pies.

admirably said freethinker. its what ive said from the start. the mccanns did not neglect their children. they made the mistake of believing the children were safe. it was an error of judgement. not neglect. but i have to say that you are wasting your time telling these people anything because they cant see through blinkered eyes.

You have a very good point there,
I've seen children who have come to school and been unruly and naughty, and it has turned out that both parents have been drunk for months and the child had not been fed at all, apart from scraps he had managed to find himself. now that is child neglect! not one mistake made by two loving parents which undoubtedly whatever the outcome they will be paying for with guilt for the rest of their lives.
