This places them at distinct advantage over others ! Why cant people acknowledge that when people dont receive the same conditions someone is always left at a huge disadvantage. What ever happened to people being assured of the same conditions, thus competing on merit alone !

It depends. Are you talking about physically challenged or a racial minority getting "favours"? I am not sure how it is in the UK, but in the States, we have a history we of being (at the least) very insensitive to minorities.
We have programs such as AA and ADA which mandate equal, or if it is impossible, equitable treatment of people.
It may very well be similar with you. The people that are being "given special consideration" may well need these to be treated equal in your society.

The first Vegas casino I worked in,there was a pretty new girl from Russia who started a few months after I did.
She always got out of work early, I mean everday for weeks and weeks, come to find out she had gotten pregnant from one of the bosses.
It became a joke with everyone since she was so sluttyand didn't keep the baby or go out with himafter it was known to everyone. He apparently liked her but she just moved on the a bigger and better paying casino, I wonder how she got that job??
