Not all motherboards support hibernation. If the option tab is not offered from control panel, power options then your motherboard is one of them. It could be that you are using XP home, have set this option but are not seeing hibernation as a choice when using start, shut down. This is a feature of home, if instead of choosing from the drop down options you type the letter H (for hibernate) then hibernate appears in the box. Or you can choose standby, press the shift key and hibernate appears, press enter while hibernate is showing. As a shortcut to shutdown try these hotkeys. Press windows key (same as start), letter u (for shUtdown), letter h to hibernate, r for restart, s for standby.

There are some versions of Windows XP that do not have the hibernate option to them. Click start and click "Shut Down"... with that next screen that pops up, if you do not see the hibernate option there, the operating system doesnt have it. In place, it has system standby, and you can set that with the other users' direction.
