Xmas eve - usually
Xmas day - nope
Dec 31st - usually
January 1st - nope
In the past, Xmas eve and New Years Eve only used to have a morning delivery. However, I don't think they are running a 2 delivery service anymore, so it is possible that they may not do ones on those days at all from now on in.
But I do remember receiving some cards through the post on Xmas eve last year though.

Royal Mail generally deliver Monday to Saturday, except Bank Holidays.
Boxing Day and New Year's Day are Bank Holidays, so no.
Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve aren't, so yes.

Christmas Eve yes the remainder no.
I am beginning to wonder why the Post office don't tell us to buy a stamp and deliver it ourselves thereby cutting out the middle man

No they don't.
Anyway If it isn't an official holiday Royal Mail employees prefer to spend their time striking.
