There are so many opportunities online that you could be busy making money for years. Since the late 90's I have made a decent income from home online promoting affiliate programs, website design, hosting and development, software sales (both direct and through affiliate programs) and in the last 4 years, made plenty stopping foreclosures. I've sold products (murano glass jewelry) online, on my own webserver, and now on eBay. eBay isn't working out for me, so will probably move everything back on my own server.
If selling products, your biggest expense, besides product, will be advertising. That's the main reason I moved to eBay...huge audience and simply listing items from the eBay store is advertising at a very small price.
Anyway, to advertise online, I've used Yahoo Marketing tools (once called Overture.com) and their pay-per-click advertising. You set up your ads, put some money into your account with them, and your advertisement will appear when someone searches using your keywords. If they click on your ad, then you pay Yahoo (or Google if you choose to use their service). This didn't work out for me very well.
So, I'm still trying to figure it all out too and the bumps'n'bruises to show for it.

Yes, for years I sold information, in the form of an e-book. I wrote how to start up a particular type of business, how to get started and where to find wholesale products. I developed a good reputation in that industry though answering questions and sold my e-book and resource guide. After ten years of that, I sold my website (an industry networking group) and some of the information for a tidy sum.
It takes hard work, a good knowledge of your subject (or good research) and honestly being helpful. I never paid for advertising online or off, although I did participate in various forums and industry related areas (wrote articles etc for trade magazines). I just provided a good service and overall word of mouth did my marketing for me.
Since it was downloadable, we used clickbank.com and 2checkout.com as our payment options.

Yeah I just made a video of my girl got a domain linked up with paypal then go into chatrooms people then get told the domain name pay £8.30 to watch the vid and a few other pics stories etc, we can make 3-400 pound per week for basicaly chatting and drawing peeps in.......................

indirectly...I do online surveys that adds Nectar points onto my card then I can spend the points.
