There are 3 different things the .lit file can be but the most common one is a readable eBook file. It can be opened using Microsoft reader.
Description: Electronic version of a book or other publication saved in the Microsoft LIT format; includes digital rights management (DRM) information, which protects copyrights by limiting the systems each book can be read on; uses ClearType technology to improve readbility.
Hope i helped somehow

LIT is used by some older versions of the COBAL progamming language. But I doubt that is what you have.
I have also seen it used for some "Literature" files, which are text e-book files the Microsoft Reader can open. Reader is available free from microsoft.com if you want to try it.
