It all depends on you budget and what type of wedding you are having. For an inexpensive affair, go buffet or finger foods like appetisers, cheese crackers, fruit and veggies. Is if more formal? You could offer a couple of dishes like ham, a pasta dish, baked stuffed chicken or a fish. It is hard to know without knowing what type of wedding you are having. Formal or casual. Expensive or inexpensive.

A sit down dinner is classier than a buffet (personally I think buffets are tacky) and usually at sit down dinner, the guests have a choise between two options that they choose beforehand when returning their rsvp letter, ie. a choise between meat or fish. If you can not afford steak, chicken can also be an option. Also hors' deuvres are usually served before dinner (or lunch if the wedding is earlier in the morning) by circulating waiters.

Whatever you do dont have Trout. I recently went to a wedding and had chosen that for the main meal, but it was gross full of bones and tasted vile.
Have a buffet so everyone gets a good choice, thats what I would if I was getting married again.

Its your wedding, you decide. Budget plays a big role in what you'll be eating on your wedding day. Good luck.

Have a buffet, sit down meals are expensive and I'd worry about spilling sauce or something down my dress.
