I cannot use anything too harmful or poisonous because I have pets.

I heard to get a bowl of apple vinegar and mix in some dish washing liquid and they swarm to it and it will kill them but I don't know if it works or not.

Double check to make sure you got rid of everything. Then take out the garbage. Wipe the counters, cabinet fronts, tables, or any other surfaces the fruit might have touched with a bleach-water solution (about 2 cap-fulls of bleach in one gallon of water). This will get rid of any fruit smells that are left, and will disinfect the surfaces safely (it wont hurt your pets unless they try to drink the bleach-water). Sweep the floor (or vacuum), then mop or wipe down the floor with the bleach solution. Your kitchen will be so clean it wont know what happened to it, and fruit flies don't like clean, bleached places.

Bug bomb(insect fogger) then disinfect with bleach
REMEMBER Extinguish ALL flames(water heater, furnace, oven and stove) before using bug bomb
I was told by an exterminator, many years ago that " insects will never leave a food source".
If the flies remain, then there is still a source of food.
They will feed on miniscule particles of food
(any food)
Even the dried up juice from the fruit is an attraction

I had that same problem a few years ago, I swore that I wasnt going to live here for another summer and thankfully no flies. I put the stopper in my sink drains after cleaning them out with soap and cleaners. I made sure that they wernt coming in from any additional water sources (ie the washer drain) I then procedded to kill them! I had 2 cats and 2 dogs and 1 baby (at that time) and I used Raid to kill them in mid air and I'd then spray the heck outta rooms that I noticed a lot of them. I didnt let my pets or baby in that room for a little while. Contact your landlord for help. also check under the cabinets, they may be coming in from mold...uuggghhhh i hate bugs

I have a couple of ideas. One, you could buy one or so of those things you put into an electrical socket that is a 24 hour insect repellent. Number two, you could get a bug zapper that you typically put outside that kills mosquito's, gnats, etc. inside your house. Then try cleaning up where you had the fruit with warm soapy water. Good luck and hope this helps!

You need to clean and disinfect better. there is still something there that they are feeding off. maybe an open garbage can or look under the cupboards and the floor level.
