You need a TV Licence to use any television receiving equipment such as a TV set, set-top boxes, video or DVD recorders, computers or mobile phones to watch or record TV programmes as they are being shown on TV.
If you use a set-top box with a hi-fi system or another device that can only be used to produce sounds and can't display TV programmes, and you don't install or use any other TV receiving equipment, you don't need a TV Licence.
That is why you pay.Surprise isn't it,not what you thought i bet.

To keep some people in a life of Luxury
We are paying their top wages because its certainly not for the rubbish programmes we get.
Fair play now and again they come up with a good drama then for months after its the same old rubbish
I really hate paying my TV licence,Then we pay for sky
I think a fairer way should be we pay for the programmes we watch on BBC ,within a month they would be bankcrupt

There is no such thing as a television licence. It goes against the fundemental principles of the Human Rights and Freedom of Speech Acts.
Wake up it's a tax!

i think it is more connected to the BBC in it's originality to pay for what they do other channels come on board and they use advertising to pay for theirs. Not sure what the excuse is now lol
Once had a friend who used his television for watching video's only and refused to pay as he was not watching one bit of television and at time he got away with it! lol

Because we pay for the British Broadcasting Corporation! It pays for the bigwigs and the programmes unlike the channels that have adverts from companies who pay to broadcast their adverts on the channels.

Because we are bullied by governments to pay if we don't then we are criminals so it's a no win situation Pay up or spend time inside could be better there than outside!

You are apparently somewhere in Great Brittain. The TV license fee is to pay for the cost of bradcasting the TV signal to your TV. You do not have to pay it. TV is a luxury. You may choose not to have or watch one and, some stations are available without license.
