YES, YOU NAME THOSE THAT ARE EXTREMELY GOOD. THE TROUBLE IS THAT THEY ARE EXTREMELY GOOD AT PROTECTING THEIR DEALERS. GET A FEW PRICES AND COMPARE THE UNITS.. GO WITH ONE THAT LETS YOU SWITCH TO ANY SERVICE PERSON WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS. LIKE-THEY SELL THEIR PARTS TO ANY LICENSED DEALER AND THEY SELL THOSE PARTS AT THE SAME PRICE FOR ALL DEALERS-NOT JUST THEIR FAVORED ONES WHO PROMOTE THEIR EQUIPMENT. YOU THEN HAVE CHOICES OF SERVICE COMPANIES WHEN REPAIRS ARE NEEDED. PRICES WILL BE DIFFERENT IN DIFFERENT LOCATIONS. SOME EQUIPMENT BRANDS AND PARTS ARE NOT VERY AVAILABLE IN SOME AREAS. THE DISTRIBUTOR MAY BE FURTHER AWAY AND AFFECTS THE SPEED OF REPAIRS.

Trane and Carrier seem to be rated as the top two on the net Lenox was in the top ten and rated about fifth basically they are all good the seer ratings relate to the cost. Installation costs vary so much so much by area and required work I cant find a price for TX, get several quotes before you decide.

Answer one is most of the air conditioning systems are compatible and have about the same life span depending on the amount of maintenance applied.
As for your second question I live in Iowa and would charge about $3,000 to completely remove and replace your old system. I have worked with every brand of equipment in the USA and I would also look into Goodman or Ruud also.
Warning some companies will look down on the less expensive brands because they are dealers of the brand they are trying to sell.
I except email.

Well I guess the heat is getting to you. Window units are fine for small ares and the bigger units work fine in large areas . As long as the unit you are using is sufficiently cooling your space with as little btu's as possible the cost should be effective enough for you not to be concerned. You have to remember that you are in an apartment owned and operated by someone else so central air may not be an option.

As for cost, no more than $3000. For a complete ranking of the different brands check out the hvac ratings page at my source. Then click on the air conditioner ratings. You will find a complete list of brands and how they compare to each other.
