If you just want internet on both PC's, Plug and Play buddy, you are all set to go, Don't pay any attention to the naysayers telling you to run wireless upstairs because that will just open you to attack from wardrivers. Obviously you are just a basic user, and as long as you don't pinch the cable you run upstairs, you're golden.

Running the cable indoors is preferred, but it will be fine outside for a long time, long time, before it gets beyond useable.....

Hope this helps and good luck.

Ok, Since you want a wired network and not a wireless network this is what you will need.

1) 1 Broadband Modem with Internet ISP Account
2) 1 Broadband Router
3) 3 Ethernet Cables
a) one from modem to router
b) one from router to computer #1
c) one from router to computer #3
4) 1 Ethernet NIC for each computer (This case QTY:2)

Thats all the hardware you will need. Now to run the network setup wizard and transfer the settings from one computer to the other you will need a floppy disk, if the 2 computers have a floppy drive, or a thumb drive.

You will then need to setup the router to talk to your ISP. Remeber routers are not plug and play. You should be fine if you just read the install guide carefully and follow its step by step instructions.

Thats it......

any router will work. But running an ethernet cable out the window is not a good idea. They are not weather rated and will deteriorate quickly. You better option is put a wireless router in, put in a wireless adpater in the PC upstairs, and just use a wire for the 2nd PC.

Once you connect everything it should come up automatically. Instructions with the router should be sufficient. But running a cable outside is a BAD idea.

we run 3 pc's off one router and none are networked, it might be easier to drill a hole in the celing than run it out the window and climb a ladder and yepp just plug n play
