The small ones aren't very powerful. We'll they are, but they need a huge power supply to run them along with complicated adaptive optics to focus them on moving targets. There are Laser systems mounted on 747s and trucks that shoot down missiles. These Laser systems depend on being able to focus on a spot long enough to heat the missile's fuel so that it explodes. It doesn't just cut things down.

As for cutting things and ppl in half with hand held lasers, It's still science fiction.

True Lasers are powerful, but as a pinpoint of light. In order to make a laser a useful weapon though, the power supply would have to be rather large.....so as a troop level weapon at this point, it isnt plausable.

the hardware to carry a powerful laser unit cannot be carried by one man. It's huge, and require alot of power

An anti ballastic misslie laser system sits in an entire boeing 747

I guess this begs the question of how humane would it be to have a weapon that even if it were practical would burn holes in you? I mean bullets are inhumane enough right, why take a weapon that would burn you and maybe even burn off limbs if it were moved across the body?
