What do you do when faced with a "friend" who is like this?
Do you hide when they come to the door, or do you have a coping strategy?

OMG! yes! and I try to Focus on the Positive the Entire time they are Yacking away, soon they get so sick of my Positive they have to leave and find someone else they can torture.
I've found that my positive statements irritate her as much as her negatives do me.

Hi!

well I have a friend...even though she seems nice and caring and helping person...every time I'm around her I get negative feeling...like negative vibrations...and I don't like staying with her because I feel that she wants to get more information's about me or someone else and to take it in her advantage.

Funny until now I think she never made something bad but I still feel that she is mean and she will do something harmful eventually.

Solution : ignoring her is the best way...not having to do nothing with her.

What an interesting question!

once upon a time, when I was married to a troll in the forest:

Honestly, I used to have friends that needed me, they were like vampires. This is a real phenomenon. Once I decided that I needed a different life and got writ of them everything improved. It is sometimes quite hard leaving behind friends and moving on. Other times you wonder who leave you behind. Now I got friends that can fix themselves and take care of themselves. It is much better. And people that suck me dry, well I move away quickly

She's not so much a friend. She is my next door neighbor.
I, never in my life heard someone complain and talk so negatively about everything. If I see her outside, I stay indoors. When I do run into her, I slowly back up into my yard and run for the door.

hehehe. you know LT Dan, I am positive minded driven type, and I will admit I cannot stand someone who seems to be more negative thinking than the positive...therefore, yeah one friend I have tend to fall under the minus catagory, what I do is simple, I don't interact with that person much...I don't initiate a phone call or email or text etc...he is who he is and I'm not interested in trying to change his bitter behavior because that just not realistic for the most part...

I work professionally in theatre. It's absolutely rife with those kinds of people; they're just frustrated with and jaded about their careers, and if they're not harping about how rotten they have it they're viciously gossiping about others in a desperate attempt to feel superior to them.

My strategy is to be the aloof one on a project, so people don't immediately get chummy with me. After figuring out which people are level-headed, down-to-earth, and not addicted to drama in their lives, I approach them for socialization.

What's up, Lt. Dan! Good morning! Yes! I do have a friend like that! Lucky for me she doesn't come around much or answer or return phone calls so I guess she's not that good a friend anymore!! We used to be really close but drifted like adults do sometimes!!

My neighbor is like that. Everything is negative for him. I have quit having a conversation with him. I only say "hi" to him now but nothing more. He lives a very sad life.

He or she is probably an energy vampire. They CAN drain energy from people...sometimes without even realizing it. Energy vampires are like cups with holes in them...no matter how much energy they have it just slowly leaks away and they need to keep refiling it.

I usually dutifully listen, but I want to scream, "Listen to yourself!" Luckily not too many people come to my door because I have them trained not to, because I sleep during the day, being a night shift worker.
