The heart as a muscle.. no.

The "Heart" as the intuition or the psychic connections between two people... Yes, of course.

A mother "hearing" her son's suffering is an example.

I believe understanding comes from thinking and living in the truth...processing honesty. As for having a place in another persons heart or them in yours, it's not the heart but the soul of a healthy person who allows honest thought.... which is always connected with the mind. People who live in the truth do not allow assumption to control their minds and therefore do not seek excuse to harm others using what they *claim* to know within their "heart". There are many reasons for crying...some of which resemble fits but definately wouldn't be the only honest answer in every life.

Some cry because they can't mistreat a another.

Some cry because they aren't loved.

I think by "heart" you mean the persons sensitivity towards others, right? Twins are known to feel each others "pain" even over long distances. Emotional pain can be sensed in a close relationship. Psychology can train some one to recognize symptoms of depression in a person. In the above mentioned examples you could concluded that a person can "hear" with their heart what is taking place in regards to another persons emotional pain.

Psychologically you can sense one person emotions. some people believe this is like a sixth sense as it goes beyond our normal senses. when psychologically you hear another persons cry, it usually mean there is a emotional connection between the two.
A persons heart cannot hear a persons cry its our emotions and the stereotypical propaganda's which makes us think its our heart.
