It appeared that the dust made people vanish. Only a couple of people left. Included a person in a radio station. It was real end of he world stuff. Ends with the heroine meeting a guy in a sports car at a shopping mall.
From memory appears that anyone who slept under a tin or metal roof was OK. I just can't remember its name.
I know its not Triffids and its not Damnation Alley

"Night of the Comet" was the first thing that came to my mind!!

I loved that 80's movie!!! One of the very few "zombie" type of movies that I like.

Oh..."Night of the Comet!"
I used to love that movie.

In "Night of the Comet", there's a scene where a girl and her boyfriend survive the night because they are in the film room of a movie theater, which is made of metal and protects them from the effects of a comet that streaks through the Earths atmosphere and turns all exposed humans to dust. A lot of the movie takes place in a mall, where the sisters are trying on all the clothes and having a good time. At the end, her sister, (who also survived) is crossing the street, when she's almost run over by a guy in a sports car. (One of the other few survivors.) She gets in the car and they "hook up".

Night of the Comet.

The dust didn't kill the people. People who were directly exposed to the comet turned to red dust. The ones who were in steel or lead lined buildings were safe and some were partially exposed and turned into flesh eating zombies.

The two sisters and one man were left and taken captive by scientists trying to make a cure. The trio saved two kids from the scientists and they all escaped.

The older sister ended up with the guy that helped them save the kids and the younger sister met a guy at the very end.

There was no DJ at the radio station (the station was automated), but that is where they met the first man.

Sounds like Night of the Comet, decent little B-flick. Tremors was about giant worms in the American desert. Quiet Earth was excellent New Zealand film, but the survivors in that one were people who died at the exact instant that scientists triggered their cataclysmic experiment.

sounds similar to the stand by stephen king.. Perhaps not though, because i don't remember the bit about the tin roof, the mall or the sports car. There was howver a jock in it and its a really good movie. It follows the book very well

Halley's Comet. They slept in a movie theater vault. When they awoke there was nothing left except little piles of dust every where. That was what was left of the human race. But the two main characters were fine because they slept in the vault.
