I was amazed by the simpe minded and aggresive bashing witnessed 2 weeks ago by Republicans against a free press by the NY Times running an ad by moveon.org.

Fact is, the Times runs almost, every day, an ad espousing various political views. Today, FeedomWatch.Org placed a full page ad criticizing the visit by Iran's President. Will Democrats scream foul? I doubt it.

Republicans, too many, have become scary with their partisan and intimidating methods, it is a disgrace to democracy and a free press.

Some people hate freedom and America. They have such an inflated sense of self-entitlement that they think everyone must be forced or intimidated into agreeing with them. The NYT needs to show some backbone and not back down. I also find it ironic that cons are always complaining that government should not interfere with business. It's apparently OK to sell defective toys to children but printing an advertisement that they find disagreeable is just too far. They want an investigation! Puhlease!

Republicans tried running an ad (full price) on MoveOn.org and were denied.

Instead MoveOn.org TOLD the New York Times to spend $100.000 less than the normal ad price to run the Betrayus ad.

Are they out to make money or make political statements?

Free press? I thought they paid $65K to run the ad...not exactly what I'd call free. My only problem with the ad was that attacking an active military member who is not a politician. Fine take an ad out after the fact and attack what he reported as false and misguided etc...but to do so before opened them up to ridicule and showed the simple fact they had no intentions of listening and already set their mind in stone.

Awwww..... Give the republicans a break, they've got a failed war, an idiot preznit, no chance of winning in '08 (including losing quite a few seats in the senate), and more scandals than you can shake the clenis at.

You would grasp at straws like the moveon.org ad too if you were so desperate to take attention away from your own failures.

Answer: NO!
After two weeks of denials, the New York Times acknowledged that it should not have given a discount to MoveOn.org for a full-page advertisement assailing Gen. David H. Petraeus.

The liberal advocacy group should have paid $142,000 for the ad calling the U.S. commander in Iraq "General Betray Us," not $65,000, the paper's public editor wrote yesterday.

The moveon ad would have been more credible had it hit the Times in response to Petraeous report. As it turns out, it was a 'stand-by' ad which means it was ordered months ago.

How can any reasonable thoughtful person imply that another person is a betrayal before he even contemplates opening his mouth?

That the Times discounted the rate confirms that they are not observers of the political process but rather, a participant.

Everyone's credibility is in the tank now and the Times has painted itself into a corner.

I'm amazed at your short-sightedness. So I suppose you think it's perfectly OK to attack someone before you even know what that person is going to say. I have to also assume that you think it's perfectly OK for a news outlet to behave in a totally partisan manner so that even it's very own Ombudsman says that the paper was wrong. Well, if that's the way you fell, you've just given up your right to ever say another thing about other news outlest, such as Fox New Channel. According to your warped set of values, it's perfectly OK to take one side over another.
