Someone said something about growing in straw so you can just rummage around and pick them when they are ready without disturbing the plant as you would if you grew them in soil. True?

Growing in a barrel is easy, Know it All describes the method well.

As for growing in straw they are still in trenches in the ground but you cover and mulch up with straw instead of soil.

In a barrel is quite easy. A plastic dustbin is ideal. You need some rich soil - preferably with some well rotted manure dug into it. Put a foot of soil in the bottom of the barrel, put your seed potatoes on top (eyes upwards) and bury them with another 6 inches of soil. As soon as leaves start forming, bury them again with another 6 inches of soil, and keep earthing up the new shoots until you've filled the barrel. Keep it watered and wait (preferably until the plants have flowered). When you can't stand the suspense any more, you've got a barrel full of potatoes.

Lots of my friends use potato barrells, what you have to remember is to keep earthing up the tops to get them to produce potatoes.

Straw bails have to be kept moist otherwise they will not grow.
