What was with the scientist Nemo's character?

In what way do you mean?

Edit-Alan Moore wrote the comic books for "League" before they made it into a movie so I wouldn't want to try to put words in his mouth, but in my opinion maybe...

Nemo was to have died in 1867, so according to the League comics, he really faked his death. Maybe by doing this and living life as a recluse under the ocean made him a little strange. Maybe he divulged himself into his work so much that he forgot there was a world above him. He did invent some awesome creations

I believe Jules Verne had written him as a native of India and he was kind of like Robin Hood because he would give salvaged treasure to the people of Crete to resist an invasion from Turkey.

I think his mind was his strongest attribute but also he was physically strong.

All the major characters in the movie are from well-loved heroes in literature Tom Sawyer,Dr Jekyll and Mr.Hyde,Allan Quatermain(King's Solomon's Mines)
Captain Nemo is from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.He is a scientific genius who roams the depths of the sea in his submarine, the Nautilus, which he built on a deserted island.
