Do trees grow from the bottom or top? In other words, if you painted an "x" on a tree five feet from the ground and then returned ten years later after the tree had grown 10 feet, would the "X" be in the same place (5 feet) or at 15 feet?

They grow from seeds. You doofuss.

I think trees grow all over, all at the same time. You can count the rings in a cross-section of a trunk to determine age. So obviously the trunks do grow.

And its obvious, too, that branches grow off of other branches... and leaves grow off of branches.

And Ive heard that the roots, themselves, are as wide and complex and as full of growth as the rest of the tree.

Im reflecting on other peoples answers here. Someone said that trees dont grow taller? Interesting. I didnt know about that tidbit! I wonder how little seedlings manage to suddenly become 100 feet tall if they dont grow taller.

Its funny that so many people can mindlessly memorize and regurgitate random "facts" that make no real sense if you think about it. Take it for granted like they actually understand what they're talking about.

At what point is a tree fully grown? Some are a hundred feet tall, two-hundred years old, and still growing taller. Some will actually grow themselves to death, collapsing under their own weight.

But hey, I must be full of crap because Im not a botanist or an agriculturist or an ecologist or a horticulturist. I dont have a degree to certifiably tell you that trees dont grow taller. They apparently start their lives fully grown.

Trees grow outwards. The X if still visible would be at the same height. When trees grow up, it's just more material growing out from the existing trunk, the trunk that is there does not get pushed up by new growth. The new growth is added to what is there.

Trees will "enlongate" from the tip or buds only. An "x" painted on a tree at 5 feet will always be at five feet. Trees, however, will "grow" all over. They will gain girth where the "x" was painted.
