My friend just gave me her beta fish because she didn't want it anymore. She had just gotten it a few months ago, so I don't think it is that old. Well, my Beta Fish, and all my other fish prior to this seems to die fast. The most was a month. This one lasted about a week. Anyways, I've read about the SBD and using water bottle (sadly after it died). And yes, I did fed it twice a day..so maybe it was that, but why does it have these fussy/cloudy stuff around it??? It cling onto the the top of the fake plants in there. Now I know that it's suffocating but most of my fish end up having that fussy thing. I wonder..is it because of the water? is it because of my room? is it too stuffy? I'm guessing these fussy stuff are caused by bacteria. I want to know, what exactly are they, how is it cause, and how can i prevent it. I did use this chemical that suppose to calm the fish, but so far, I haven't use any bacteria remover chemical. so yeah, what can it be. It was so pretty, red w/ long fins.

Sometimes fish get fungus, which appears to be cloudy or fuzzy. They sell medications like Pimafix for fungus.

It sounds like this is not a good hobby for you since you keep killing your fish. I think you should not have any more fish until you read every fish keeping book you can find.

I have had a few bettas over the years but most of mine live around 2-4 years and this is what has worked for me.

Get them a larger tank area, at least 1 gallon. Nothing less.
Get something to circulate the water.
Feed them bloodworms or daphnia. Stay away from "betta pellets" because they only cause constipation.
Just like all fish, bettas need clean water so change 10% of the water every week and make sure to take the chlorine out of the water.
Other then that, bettas are farely easy to take care of. Also, remember they are air breathers so they will need an area open to get to the top of the water.

I don't have an answer but my Beta fish just died this morning and my sister directed me to this site to find out why. I took very good care of him, but I never saw him eat. I think he maybe had a body image problem. I got him 2 weeks ago, so he wasn't very old. I tried 2 different kinds of food, including the pellets and some shrimp looking food items. He never even came close to looking like he was hungry, and I thought maybe he just didn't want me to see him eat. But then I always found the non-eaten pieces of food that had sunk to the bottom of the bowl and were all soggy. I just really don't understand why he had to die. Are there any support groups out there? I need to continue the healing process and my roommate wants to go get another fish today but I do not think that I am ready. Any words of advice? I would greatly appreciate it.

I lost 5 Bettas to the "cotton" disease you're describing. Once they get it, forget it, they're gone in a day, two the most. However, I DO have the answer to your problem & haven't lost any since. Take a gallong jug (I use a milk gal.) Fill it w/water to keep at room temp. so it w/be ready when you want to clean the bowls. Put in 1 (one) tablespoon of sea or acquarium salt. When I'm ready to chg. the water, I add 1 (one) drop of Methelene Blue to the water & shake it up well. The Meth. Blue kills diseases. This DOES DEFINATELY work & I haven't lost a fish since. I got my ans. on Y. Ans. & haven't had any problems since. But that "cotton" disease is VERY contageous & make sure everything is clean if you're going to get more fish. But definately use that water mixture & you'll be OK w/the diseases. Good luck...

Male Bettas make a bubble nest at the top of the water. so the 'fuzzy stuff' is OK. Bettas like very fresh, soft water. I colloect rain water for my bettas. I use a small tube to suck the water out of the bottom of the bowl so i dont disturb them much and I only take out 25% of the water every other day. Bettas have a lung so its OK if there is stuff on top of the water.
