I can use it to create & read DVD data files for back up, but when a movie DVD is inserted I cannot get any player, including Windows Media Player to respond to it. I presumably have lost a driver/codex or whatever, but do not know how to identify what driver might be missing, where to get a replacement and where to put it on my hard drive! Dell PC with Windows XP Pro using Roxio Easy Media Creator 8 & have Dell drivers disc and original Roxio disc

We'll start with the easiest first: Turn off the computer and reboot in say 5 minutes. There may be a temp broken record, shuting down will fix it. If that did not work, go to the dvd trouble shooter in help and support. It will walk you thru step by step to solve the problem. In my opinion, sounds like your driver needs to be updated, if it was lost or corrupted by say a virus you would see an error message.
Now if all of this is too hi tech and you just want it fixed, then go to the Dell Support on line and they will diagnose the problem and fix it- for a fee. But it will be fixed right, I have used them myself and was quite satisfied.

The fact that it says DVD-RAM in My Computer doesn't matter atall; if it is a DVD player and DVD writer then it is a type of RAM. The fact that it has stopped functioning as a DVD player is quite separate. Check in Control Panel - Performance and Maintenance - System - Hardware - Device Manager - Click on the + next to DVD - double click on the DVD label - look to see if it is working properly....you can also trouble shoot it here and reinstall the driver. If all is well here... could the DVD be faulty....try another.

There is usually a separate CD with the DVD software on it. If you added the DVD player to your computer after original purchase, the software CD should have come with the DVD player/burner.

You may be able to download it from Dell. Go to http:www.dell.com and hunt up the support section. Type in your service tag, and it will know what software you should have.

get a good disk cleaner and run that a few times see if that helps either that or you got a double layered disk that does not work in your cd unit
