Looks like all agree it is the Republic of Ireland. If you had listed a date more info could have been given. If it is pre-decimal coinage it will have a hen with chicks on it. If a decimal one pence, it will have a stylized bird on it with long wings. Ireland is famous for what collectors call the" barn yard" coins for they have animals on them. They now use the Euro.

eire is the republic of Ireland, it was the currency used before they decided to use the euro. I live in northern Ireland were we use the british coin, 1p is less than an american cent.

I think you will find that the word is "Eire". This is the Republic of Ireland. The coin will be a penny and may be worth about one American cent.
