"To Joy" (An die Freude in German, in English often familiarly called the Ode to Joy rather than To Joy) is an ode (poem) written in 1785 by the German poet and historian Friedrich Schiller, known especially for its musical setting by Ludwig van Beethoven in the fourth and final movement of his Ninth Symphony (completed in 1824), for four solo voices, chorus and orchestra.

Therefore J.S. Bach (1685 - 1750) couldn't have know it.

I don't understand the first answer... J.S. Bach Beethoven?

Anyways,
The Theme Ode to Joy comes from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony "Choral" It is the Finale, and one of the best, and most recogonized finales of all his symphonies. It is dubbed Choral...because people sing! Ode is a song of praise for something/someone.

Hope this helped

From the German writer Johann Cristoph Friedrich von Schiller. All his dramas were a trumpet-call to what was best and noblest around him: his verses stirred the spirit which, when the time came, was to achieve the liberation of his country: and they have justly found a lasting home in the German heart.
