Kollywood is a name often applied to the home of the Tamil-language film industry based in India, and to the industry as a whole. The name, Kollywood, has derived from Kodambakkum, the area in Chennai (formerly Madras), where Kollywood films are widely produced.

Kodambakkum + Hollywood = Kollywood
Tollygunge + Hollywood = Tollywood (Tollyginge is the film studio area near Kolkata, one of oldest film city in India.)
Malayalam + Hollywood = Malluwood For producing Malayalam soft porns)
Bombay + Hollywood = Bollywood (main film city of India)

These name are popular nicknames used by many. However I do not like to use them as those ar both insult to Hollywood and our Indian films.

India has more than 25 states. Unlike USA, people in these states speak languages that are very different from each other, excepting a few states that share a common language like Hindi. Hindi is considered a national language and state languages are usually called "regional" although constitutionally/legally this status to Hindi gets continually questioned.

Since language is an important aspect of identity and culture, regional language films command a unique popularity in India especially in states that do not have Hindi speaking people.

Bombay is where the Hindi films industry's focal point is. Hence its called Bollywood, connoting in a not-so-creative and obvious manner that its the Bombay's own Hollywood.

Kodambakkam in Chennai, capital of the Tamilnadu state, is a region that can be called the nerve center of Tamil (a regional language) cinema. Hence the term Kodambakkam's own hollywood or Kollywood.

Andhra, another state where Telugu (another regional language) is spoken and has a good film industry didn't want to get left alone and gets referred to as Tollywood. (Telugu Hollywood)

Malluwood is not as commonly used as the other three. Malayalam is the language of Kerala state, colloquially called Mallu. Hence the word Malluwood.

It should be mentioned that Indian film industry is the largest in the world in the number of movies made and audience. Most of these films get made in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu.
