I am most grateful for you taking the time to ask such a pertinent question. Might I add that you are indeed a most perceptive person. Thankyou most kindly for giving me the opportunity to answer such an interesting question.

No I don't think they do. Well at least some of us do. I really think this depends on the generation. Older people do have manners and use them as do most baby boomers. The Y generation are so involved in themselves that they see manners in a different way. I think manners are essential. Manners are close to friendly and considerate.

Jeannie made a great observation. Protocol, courtesy, manners, whatever you choose to call it, has dramatically devolved over the last 20 years or so, to the point where only past generations still treat all with respect. This latest "Me" generation is crude, rude and lewd. Just look at the standards allowed on TV or in music. The typical Rap song has more swearing in it than I have used in a lifetime. The "F" bomb is more acceptable today than saying 'please' or 'thank you'.
Today's children are bombarded with ads for condoms and taught that casual sex and having a 'mate' rather than a 'family' is just fine. The average 'sit com' on TV is just a constant procession of nearly naked babes banging nearly naked guys. The corporate world of marketing knows that 'sex sells'. The end result of this unending message of just screwing you way to success is evident all over.

But, of course, this is just my humble opinion.

Peace,

Buzzy

I'm glad you asked that question because something has bothered me since I was to the grocery store last evening.

As I was waiting in line a young lady about 25 was getting her groceries, she was looking at the clerk as the clerk was ringing up the groceries and, the young lady was chewing bubble gum like a flipping cow and, blowing bubbles and, popping them right in the clerks face.
I couldn't believe the young lady was so rude as to do this, she wasn't a school girl. When I got up to the clerk we discussed this, she said this wasn't the worst incident she had happen..

yes, manners still exist but not anymore like the old days. i am a filipina and obviously we are known for our being full of manners. but unfortunately as time passes by, and with so many influences, manners are lessened. luckily, most filipinos find time to incorporate in their children good manners. . . .

If you're lucky. Unfortunately, I think the main problem is manner norms are changing.

I've had better luck in the South (US) with common courtesies (opening doors, saying 'excuse me'), but better luck in the North (US) with social decorum and tactfulness in conversation. Nothing against either of these places, of course!
