I believe the answer is yes. They are still trying to do this now but with so much focus on Iraq they are unable to do something without failing right now.
If we were to pull out now it would have two effects
One it would allow them to concentrate on the US as a Prime target
2nd it would give them a morale bost to take the fight to us.

I don't really know.
It seems a real possibility, though.
Currently, both countries are held together by the glue of the US military.... not very effectively, it seems because enough of the locals resent our presence there.
I think that part of the insurgents' and Taliban's success is fed by the media's focus on the negative that is happening there. If the news reported the good things that the US military is achieving, then that would reduce terrorist morale- "Hey, the US military isn't here to take over- they're training local soldiers... and building schools, restoring power, building infrastructure... and then moving out.... " It would also build US morale. Personally, I'd love to hear something besides a body count!
If we were to pull out and go home without some kind of stable locally-run government, I fear it would be a disaster. I imagine that the insurgents/Taliban would take control because they're the ones who are organized (at least Taliban is), and they're the ones with the "power"... power of fear. They've intimidated enough of us into thinking they're unbeatable that we went home.... what are the regular citizens going to think?
I don't think that those are the kind of people that should be in a ruling body.
On the other hand.................
Our threatening to pull out may be enough incentive for the majority of the citizens (non-inurgents and non-Taliban) to organize themselves and start really working toward a stable democratic government.
BTW-
1) I still don't get the whole Muslim extreminst mindset- We don't agree with how you're living your life on the other side of the planet, so we'll bomb you... HUH?? What happened to "live and let live".....?
2) Oh, and what was the point of September 11, anyway? Who in their right mind would attack the most powerful nation on Earth?? (Ok, so I'm probably a little arrogant in thinking of the US that way, but....) Was it their idea of a "pre-emptive strike"... for what? What were they afraid we'd do? I was under the impression that "attacking the US on their soil was a bad idea" was well-established in WW2- Does Pearl Harbor ring a bell??? Go ahead- bomb us... we'll kick your trash... (and then rebuild you, and then leave).
On the other hand, maybe that's the key- "extremists" are NOT in their right mind.

If we brought the troops home from Iraq and Afghanistan, would the terrorists bring war to our soil? A very good question. In order to answer it we should consider the following:
1. WW1 lasted four years.
2. WW2 lasted four years.
3. 9-11 occurred six years ago.
4. What kind of enemy declares war on an enemy nation, attacks once and then does not follow through with further attacks in six years?
Which means:
a. Homeland security is doing a terrific job.
b. Our troops in Iraq & Afghanistan are doing a terrifc job and should just remain there.
c. Or... Well the 'or' is unconscionable and perhaps even unpatriotic but perhaps it IS best to bring the troops home and just see what happens.
Personally I like 'c' best. Let's just bring the troops home where they are in a better position to protect us from further terrorist attack(s)!
God bless our troops.
H
Also:
The southern border is not so much a threat as is our northern border. A large Mulsim community exist just north of our northern border and people can simply WALK accross where they do not stick out like a sore thumb. Muslims stick out big time at our southern border. How soon we forget that Mexico did not allow Hitler to attack us from their nation. Friendly terms with Mexico would further insulate us from attack from the south. Make friends with your neighbors, NOT ENEMIES.

Depends on who the terrorists actually are, doesn't it?
There aren't a bunch of Arabs out to get us, if that's what you mean. No, if we left Iraq & Afghanistan, they wouldn't come here. If they really wanted to hurt us, they'd already be coming here. H's answer up there seems to ignore the CLEAR TRUTH that d) There never was any substantial threat from 'Muslim extremists'.
The truth is, the terrorists are within our own government, business, and media. The terrorists are Zionist neocons. And yes, they will bring their fake fight here when our politicians stop giving them what they want. Or, there will come a time when the rest of the world gets fed up with us and decides to act.
It would be much nicer if the American people took control of their government. You know, the one that was supposed to be of the People, by the People, for the People?
But we've been brainwashed and we don't know our own history. So get used to it.

They would not have to -- we are more than able to bring their war to the U.S. ourselves. By invading Iraq (in a "Pre-emptive Strike", a fancy term for "INVASION WITHOUT CAUSE"), all Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/etc did was prove that the Islamist Extremeists were right about the U.S. -- that all "we" want is to control the entire world.
And think about it, really. Iraq has never been about fighting terrorism or helping opressed peoples -- if it were, U.S. troops would right now be fighting in places such as Darfur, where entire communities are wiped out because they are not "pure". We would be fighting in Iran, to ensure the freedoms of those living there. We would be fighting in North Korea, for the same reason.
Yet, we are not, because Darfur, Korea, etc. do not have large reserves of OIL. Terrorism was just an excuse to go into Iraq, and it wasn't even the original excuse.
All the U.S. has done by invading Iraq is show the world that we will "help" others -- as long as we get to dictate afterwards what sort of government is allowed in the places we "help". And that is only one of the things the extremeists have been saying all along.....
Yes, bringing our troops home will most likely mean the Extremeists will bring their war here...but they have already caught us with our pants down. What would they really have to gain by showing again how easy it is to put fear into our hearts?
As for the U.S./Mexico border being "vulnerable"... I know of at least ten places on the Minnesota/Canadian border where a person can walk or boat across without anyone knowing -- and all of those places within a few hour's walk from roads. All this hoo-ha about the southern border...and NOTHING about the northern border. Just how "safe" is this country, do you think?
No matter what measures are used, the only one that will work 100% is to kill EVERYONE on the planet.................................

Gita Sehgal would desire to be counseled for being authentic to the unique human rights reason. Amnesty international has become an Islamic propaganda gadget. there are a number of such "Human rights activists" parading in India too like Teesta Setalvad. She's in no way fought for the rights of those burnt alive interior the prepare at Godhra or the sufferers of 26/11 assaults yet has made a occupation out of Gujarat riots. i would not be shocked if those so talked approximately as Human rights activists are funded through Islamic petro money. they have not something to do with Human rights and the certainty. Infact she replaced into caught through sit down making various exaggerated fake claims of muslims being tortured in the time of riots.

No--the "if we don't fight them there we will have to fight them there" is jsut one of Bush's political slogans--and proveably false, at that.
Our presence in Iraq is gnerating more terrorism, not reducing it (note--that's the assessment of Bush's own intel people, not just a "lib" claim).
We do NOT need to simply withdraw from Afghanistan, however. Instead, we need to get back to what we started to do there in the first place--destroy al-Qaida and the Taliban and rebuild the country. That will take a while--mostly because the situation has deteriorated due to Bush's mismanagement. But we do have a legitimate presence there, unlike in Iraq--and a real national interest in the outcome.

Al Qaeda's first priority would be to reestablish themselves in Afghanistan and set up a safe haven in Iraq. Once they've done that they will have demonstrated to the Muslim World that they have once again defeated the mighty United States. They'll use this propaganda to scare our last few allies away - thereby isolating us. Since we failed to keep our promises in Afghanistan and Iraq, no one will help us. Then the hammer will fall. Over and Over, only we'll no longer be able to do anything about it. Eventually Islamic radicals will get their hands on a Nuclear device and will vaporize a major American city. Then the 4000 dead soldiers will seem like nothing compared to the 4 million dead American civilians!
Sounds nice huh?

Yes and no.
Terrorism has risen since the invasion of Iraq, and not just a little bit. It's up by HUNDREDS of percentile points.

However, we don't live on an 'island'. The U.S. has ALWAYS battled terrorists. This whole 'War on Terror' just a tagline for the media. There has always been a war on terror.
If the U.S. was REALLY concerned about it, they would be doing something about the Mexican border. ANY terrorist can literally walk into our country. But, instead of closing the border, Homeland Security is busy checking shampoo bottles and chasing e-mail.
Sad...
