My favorite is Jimmy Page.

He was a great overall guitarist who made some great riffs and even better solos. Plus, he was blues influenced and obvious wasn't afraid to play the acoustic guitar on Led Zeppelin albums even when they were a hard rock/heavy metal band.

It could also be Eric Clapton though...

He has some great solo work, but I love his work with Cream the best. The other people were great in their respective categories, but Eric Clapton just blows me away with his Cream solos. They're very bluesy, even somewhat psychedelic.

And of course...Jimi Hendrix.

He's often regarded as the greatest guitarist of all time. The solo in "All Along The Watchtower" is powerful, and "Purple Haze" is one of the best guitar songs ever. All his albums are excellent guitar albums, and his bandmates work well to create a great sound.

I can't choose....

I could never pick just one, because I like several guitarists for different reasons. They all have their own style.

These are my Top 11 guitarists, in no particular order {love them all equally!} :~

Jimmy Page
Lindsey Buckingham*
Jimi Hendrix*
Slash
Mark Knopfler
Peter Green
Brian May
George Harrison
David Gilmour
Billy Duffy
Eric Clapton

* I am amazed and impressed that not only are / were these two entirely self-taught, but they also cannot / could not read music.

I also like the various guitarists who have worked with Meat Loaf.

i reallly like slash, blues-influenced rock = my cup of tea.

but I love anything and everything guitar-related, so every other decent guitarist out there comes a close second - kirk hammett all the way over to eric clapton.

Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Slash, Eric Johnson.....many more can fill this space--but who's the guy who influenced many of these guitar rock icons???

Chet Atkins

And if you can sample his music--it'd blow you away someone can finger fret / pick a Gibson / Les Paul like Atkins did----and he did it in the 50's--WAY before Eddie did!!!
