It's easy to get the news from around the world, at least on the major events, but people really care about what happens around the corner too. It has a larger effect on their lives. New business opening? Rash of crime? Road construction? Local high school sports? USA Today isn't going to cover all of this for every town in America. The local paper fills in the gap on such matters.

It helps build a sense of community and it allows people to share in what is going on in their home town. They read about a referendum that's coming up or a bake sale, about important and less important things, and decide whether they want to particpate, and what they want the town they live in to be like.
