when your parents constantly tell you that you're useless and worthless and that they don't love you?

It wasn't my parents, it was my Aunty Peggy. She was the 'matriarch' of our family ... my Mam's eldest sister.

I look a lot like her and every time someone mentioned that in front of her, she took it as the biggest insult. When I decided to stay on at school she told me she didn't know why I wanted to waste everyone's time and energy and I should do something useful like look after my mother (she'd had a massive stroke just under a year earlier).

She told me that I was stupid and would never amount to anything ... Thing is that because of her attitude and the fact that she considered me selfish to be trying to get support when Mam obviously needed more attention than me, it left me with very low self esteem and zero self confidence.

I didn't achieve anything.

My advice would be to ignore them. You are not useless and if they don't love you (or say it .... they'll love you quickly enough when you have succeeded and are earning good money) then they are being very selfish.

This is YOUR life and you only get one. Your first allegiance is to yourself. You owe it to yourself to push yourself.

Parents (and my aunt) are highly influential and we are programmed to believe what they say but there are times when you must push beyond that.

I believe in you. You can do anything you put your mind to, you do have worth and I would love to hear that you are succeeding in whatever you choose to do.

They **** you up, your mum and dad,
They mean not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were ****** up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself.

Nobody can hurt me more saying those things more than my parents. It's the most horrible feeling in the world!!

Wow...I hope that's not happening to you...you are worthy and certainly very lovable! If that's the case, I could only feel sorry for those kids of parents....

They've never told me this. Do your parents tell you this? You need to get out of that situation!

My parents never told me that to my face. However, I did overhear a member of my family insulting me.

I'd feel like I am a rubbish produced by my mother that they don't even want. My parents don't tell their children things like that. yet.
