I like Visa but my bank switch to MasterCard. I am going on vacation and I have found that overseas some counties do not accept MasterCard. I'm glad I have a Visa for emergency.
As for America Express, there are a number of places that don't accept it, and just recently they offer a card that you don't have to pay in full each month.
To help you decide you need to look at is the interest rate you are charged each month with each card.

Visa and Mastercard and pretty equal now. There are still lots of places that don't take American Express.
