As far as Marvel comics are concerend, Stan Lee is generally accepted as a creator, publisher and spokesman.

While I know DC comics were founded by Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson, I couldn't give a name I associate with DC comics that would be a counterpart of Lee's. Is or was there such a person? Why or why not? I'm not making a Marvel / DC judgenment here, just curious.

That guy would be Julius Schwartz. 42 years at DC, massive influence on the Silver age. His revival of great characters at dc started the silver age, leading to marvel changing their books.

The biggest difference between the two men was that Stan Lee was more of a showman, and sold himself well.

Another reason that Lee stood out that cannot be overlooked was that Marvel had Jack Kirby.

So anytime you go back and look at all those great silver age covers with weird stories: Giant head flash, apes attacking cities, Space aliens and spaceships, superman changing into weird shapes, golden age/silver age battles....think Julius Schwartz!

After he left Marvel in the 1960's and returned to DC the closest person to this would be Jack Kirby. Others in the running Julies Swartz, Gardner Fox, and Joe Kubert. None of these are quite like Stan Lee thank God he is given to much credit each of these men did more for comics than Stan Lee can ever hope to. Kirby along with Joe Simon saved comics in the 50's. Julie wrote and or edited most of the DC line in the late 60's throu 70's. Gardner Fox created the Super Hero Team in the golden age with the Justice Socitey and revived the idea in the Silver Age with the Justice League (this led to the Fantastic four and Marvel Comics as we know it). Joe Kubert dominated the War comics ganra and still teaches many of the up and coming artists including his sons Andy and Adam.

The structure of DC Comics was a lot different than Marvel's. In addition Stan Lee promoted himself with his "Soap Box" column and his appearances in the actual comics themselves, making it easier for him to become the face of Marvel..

Marvel started in the 1960's (even though it was descended from Atlas and before that Timely). DC started out in the 1930's.

Stan Lee was a writer, the guys at DC were mostly strictly editors meaning the fans did not know them lick Stan Lee.

That said you could say M.C. Gaines who guided DC (while his son, William Gaines would guide EC Comics and later Mad Magazine) was one of the prime people behind DC (actually one of the sister companies American Comics which would become DC) He greenlighted a lot of the bigger heroes who are even out there today,

In the 1960's I'd say Julius Schwartz just because he appeared in stories and had such a big impact on the silver age of comics.

But I basically think you are right in that there is no equal to Stan Lee at DC.

Unfortunately there isn't because the majority of the DC characters were created by different individuals where as the majority of Marvel characters were created or co-created by Stan Lee.
