I know that we have all recently heard the news about the 6 students in Jena, Lousiana that were put in jail after beating a white student. Though I do agree that they should have been charged; I do not believe that the charges should have been so excessive. This was a school yard fight and, I feel, that it should've been treated as such. Never the less, my question is: Why are so many people reluctant to say that this indeed is a race related issue.

It makes me afraid that in this day and age we do not recognize racism for what it is.

the trend of thinking is that if whites or christians do it it is racism or discrimination. if any other race or religion does it it is "self defense" or they were provoked there is always an excuse. Where I'm from a school yard fight is 1 mebbe 2 on one but not 6 that is a GANG beating. the attempted murder charge was stiff but the current charges are acceptable in my opinion

In my opinion, sometimes people read too much into things.

Why is this a race related issue?
Some kid beat up another kid, and now claims 'ooh but i`m of this-and-this minority"? So what? He beat up someone.

Doesn`t matter if he is black, white, yellow or even purple with red polka dots.
If you cannot handle the pressure, then THINK before you act.

Imho, race is irrelevant.
One guy got agressive, didn`t think, hurt someone, and now whines that he wasn`t responsible.
Bullsh*t!
If you can`t do the time, don`t do the crime - cliche but true!

because now a days everytime something happens to anyone that isnt white it must be racism. stop using being a different race as an excuse for the bad people. deal with the fact the the world is full of bad people it doesnt matter what color they are

it is impossible to actually know if it is a race issue. what i mean is, we dont know what would have happened if the 6 people attacked a person of another race

so, i think some people think that it would have happened the same way no matter who attacked who, and thus are reluctant to say it is a racial issue

Human comes from his/her history. He/She has become brain washed until he/she is 4 to 7 years old. Leaving the false ideas, which are dictated from our childhood, is very difficult. Racism gets less and less, but still can see some unaware people believe in it. The people who are ready to die or kill for their idea are the same as the racists. They may like to die and kill for their religion.

You are not alone. I found this article today in the Washington Post. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/09/20/AR2007092001958.html

We are still so far from fairness and equality. At least you and I realize it... and I know there are others like us.

We need to stick together.

People are afraid of the reaction of others , if they choose either sides.
They think it is better not to say anything.
