Because of the swelling it could be an infection but the only way to know for sure is to have this evaluated by your doctor when they come back from out of town. In the mean time you can try applying a cool, wet face towel to the area to see if that helps ease some of the swelling.
As for the large labia minora, if this is something consistent that can be normal for some women to have but I would recommend checking with your doctor about that as well to see what they say.

You might have a yeast infection. I would buy one of those new test that vagisil came out with that tells you if you have a vaginal infection. If it says that there is nothing wrong with you then the tissue down there just might be really sensitive. I have this problem and the gyno told me to use a bar of white, un-scented soap to clean myself down there. It really has made a huge difference for me.It is impossible to find un-scented soap these days but I use "Pure and Natural". It contains very little perfume in it. Also wear only cotton underwear and don't take sit down baths. Sit down baths can cause Bacterial Vaganosis.

Could just be a "pimple" of some sort. Sometimes you can get a small cyst or pimple in that area. Is it sore to the touch? And sometimes a yeast infection will cause swelling. If you take bubble baths, that could also cause an infection too. This would cause swelling in the vaginal lips.~

Sounds like an abscess - possibly caused by an infected hair follicle or soap getting into a pore. Go see a doctor because an abscess is an infection that needs to be treated.

dont worry relax.. when anything goes wrong down their the first this we do is freek out.. lots of unfair things happen to woman. its probably an infected air folical from shaveing (ingrown hair) i would soke in a clean hot tub.. it will continue to hurt and be sore for a few days but it will work its way out.. once it drains it will be less painfull.. i would still get in to see the doc cause they will give you crean or an antibiotic and culture it to be safe.. but if it doesnt get better in a few days to 1 week deff call the doc cause those can get very painfull.. It will probably get worse before it gets better but good luck im sure you will okay.. :)

COULD BE YOU'RE ALLERGIC TO SOMETHING OR HAVE AN INGROWN HAIR, OR EVEN A BOIL, (BUT THAT WOULD BE VERY SORE TO TOUCH)
GENTLY WASH YOUR PERINEAL AREA WITH ANTIBACTERIAL SOAP & PAT DRY. TRY TO GO WITHOUT UNDERWEAR IN THE HOUSE & LET THE AREA GET SOME FRESH AIR. DON'T WEAR TIGHT CLOTHING LIKE JEANS.
DOES NOT SOUND LIKE ANY KIND OF COMMUNICABLE DISEASE.
YOU'LL BE OK. WE WOMEN HAVE ALL SORTS OF WEIRD THINGS HAPPEN TO OUR BODIES.
I AGEE WITH THE ANSWER JUST BELOW MINE. DO SOAK IN A TUB OF VERY WARM WATER A COUPLE OF TIMES A DAY. SEE THE DOCTOR IF IT DOESN'T IMPROVE IN A FEW DAYS OR SOONER IF IT'LL EASE YOUR MIND.

This could be an infection, so I would suggest you see your doctor when they return.
