Is it the only way to be free of the past?

But the past must be remembered so that we can grow.....To learn we must remember the lessons we have taken on and learned......or we are doomed to repeat the lesson......

Like spirituality, there are MANY roads to Freedom. NOne is wrong and none is the ONLY right way to get there. Besides it's NOT the goal, it's the journey that's the thing to enjoy. Sounds kind of like Spirituality, doesn't it? but in essence aren't they ALL similar?

The only way to be free of the past is to get fully involved in the present and in planning for the future.

yes, but i use to make the big mistake of thinking to forgive someone is to open the door for them to come in.

i'm in the middle of learning to forgive someone who treated me horribley. do i want them in my life, no. there's such a thing as i forgive you and now i wish the best for you in your life then, go our seperate way's.

with some people you can only try to see why it is that they do what they do and feel sorry for them and wish them well. this is a form of forgivness. with this kind of person just becasue you have forgiven them, so you can grow pick up and move on. however the other person hasnt changed they will do the same as before. so it's best to understand the character of the person and just move on with no guilt.

hope this was helpful

The only way? No. You need to let it go one way or another, but forgiveness doesn't have to be the way. Personally I'm more into acceptance than forgiveness.

I accept that there are people out there who have hurt me in the past. That doesn't mean I forgive them, I just see no point in hanging onto the past.

Possibly coming to terms and accepting the past could also be a way to freedom. Or a combination of acceptance and forgiveness.

Forgive who? yourself or the others?

The past weighs on us all the time. The memories of the past is not a physical load on us but a very heavy mental load. The reasons for our unhappiness , we try to put on others , outside of us . "He did it to me" "she did that to me" is the constant reminders of the load. WE can , mentally, forgive them but the essential need is to forgive ourselves . This is very difficult.
I would say that total surrender is the only way to freedom. Surrender to who? Please think over.

accept, forgive, then let go. for me it's the only way to be free of the past. things may be different for other people, but for me, i think it is best that not only do we accept, forgive, and let go of others but of ourselves. to be free of the past you need to be sure that the past remains in the past, forgotten. if not, then all you can achieve is the present and past well remebered, and no future. tying yourself to things you can't accept as the past. you can be free but you're never free. =)

well, its one of the many ways to freedom, i believe.
if you are harboring any resentments twords another or even yourself, yes i believe you need to rise above it.
its hard to get to the future when you live in the past....so 2 speak.
cope, deal, next !!
wish ya well.

No, actually vengeance does feel pretty damn good. When you've bought and payed for it....It is well worth the cost.
You usually get what you pay for in life.
