I think about others a lot more than I do myself. I'm realizing people only care about themselves anymore. How can I change?

Thinking about others allot and forgetting about you it is not psychologically healthy, because excessive empathy might reveal low self-esteem. In other words, you want to compensate something by always putting others before you.

How to be more selfish? Do something for you every week. Start with something small(buying something that you always wanted, going to see places that you always wanted, talking with people that you haven't seen for a long time, and most important - remember situations when you helped people and felt good, satisfied about you although they didn't reply in any way).
In the future, when you are helping or thinking about others, don't expect them to think or help back . Try to see the balance between helping and thinking about others because you want to feel accepted by them, and helping and thinking about others because they really need it and it doesn't matter for you if they reply or not.

I hope I could help.

You do not want to become selfish, for it is narcissistic. From reading your explanation, it sounds like self love is what you seek. Learn to appreciate you simply for who you are. Know that people have little to no problem receiving. When the shoe is on the other foot, few come to your rescue. Learn to say no when you feel like saying yes. Learn to put expectations on those who you often cater to and let them know. Learn to let others call you first. You will find out that they will not call you or call you to ask why have you not called. To them, you are the one who supposed to do the calling. I can write a book, for I am like you. The things that transpired when I took ownership of my own life was very surprising. Guess what, I did not have as many friends as I thought. The bottom line is that we buy our friends but do not realize it until we become more proactive. God did not ordain you to be a floor mat or Mother Teresa. Good luck!!

Life is about balance .
If you mostly care for others , and neglect yourself ,
The results are bad for you .
You should take the time to attend to your health ,
education and welfare so as to inspire others to do the same .
You can also , care for others but be aware of the interactions .
Some people are like substance abusers , with no motivation to provide for themselves , who are just looking for someone to be a provider .
And that is NOT a healthy way to live .

Be aware , & care for others to the extent you are teaching them to fish .
Do not make a career of fishing for them .

Spend a bunch of money on things that will make you happy, like going to strip clubs.

Don't change yourself. You'll be just like the very thing you cannot stand.
