Well, there a lot of information, so I'll keep it simple.

To carry on living- when you produce new cells, all DNA from the parent cell is replicated once to provide enough DNA for a new cell (the 2 resulting daughter cells have exactly one half new and old DNA).

Do you need to know about it in prokaryotic or eukaryotic cells?

DNA replication is a long process, one too long to answer here. It is basically the unwinding of the double helix, separating the two strands and copying from the template strands. Why it occurs? It has to occur before cell division can take place.
