Originally it was called DARPA net and was military computers hooked together, then a couple of colleges, UC Berkley, USC joined in with ARPA net, when more and more schools connection the ARPA and DARPA combined to become the Internet. You could not run any type of business on your computer if it utilized any portion of the DARPA net, when Al Gore says he invented the Internet he is really saying that he worked to deregulate DARPA allowing businesses to be run.

Now to your question, the AD's that you see popping up are targeted advertisements, every time you visit a webpage there is a small file called a cookie placed on your computer. These cookies track what you were looking at, keeps your username and other information, as you travel around the web ads will pop up to show you things that you have looked at.

It is a PAIN in the rear but a good pop up blocker is nice to have.

Now, do you have TiVO or cable TV, Satellite, these units can track what you watch and how long you watch, pretty scary isn't it.

You're on, I'll bet that the asker will be 31 on October 9th,
in case you have not noticed, the younger generation speaks differently than we do, it comes from using chat rooms where they shorten their speech to save typing.

Asker: I know it is not polite to ask a woman her age but your screen name does sort of give it away, right?

The internet as we know it today was actually developed as a defense project during the cold war days, with the idea being in the event of a nuclear war, and communication lines went down because whole cities ceased to exist, the network would still survive, rerouting packets of data around breaks in the chain. The idea was to link all of the missile sites so a coordinated response could be launched even if we were attacked in a first strike scenario and lost many cities. It works because it is like a spider web. You can break many individual strands, but the web still exists with other strands which can carry the data from one side to the other. Now, you know why it is called a web rather than anything else. Sure, there is a whole lot of information out there which you can find, but there is a problem, no authority to know the data you find is valid. There is no arbitration, no one entity to certify the authenticity of the data. I can put up anything I want, right or wrong, and there is nobody to tell you that what you find on my site is correct or misinformation or a blatant lie. From your question, I am betting you are in school and are having a hard time of it. Your use of the language leaves a bit to be desired. If I was grading your question in an English class, you would lose a lot of points for misuse of verb tenses and improper grammar. If the grammar you illustrate with your question is typical of your English language communication skills, you will not be finding a job anytime soon. I would reject a resume with this level of language use because of poor communications skills. I am sorry to be the one to tell you this. Reading and writing well are the two most important skills you can learn in school. And, they need tests, written tests, to gauge your progress at learning these things. It is your responsibility to learn as best you can. It is the responsibility of the school to test your knowledge and gauge your progress. You have this responsibility because society says so, as that is what it takes to be a productive member of this society. You can be an absolute genius and have the answer so we can have world peace and the cure for cancer, but if you can not express yourself so others will understand it, how will anyone ever know? Look at the president... He says things which at times make NO sense because he uses the wrong words to express his thoughts. These slips are called "Bushism's" and if you use the web search engines, can find MANY examples of where Dubya has mis-spoken and said something different than what he meant to say on numerous occasions. Some examples are below. You are no different than Dubya. He shows his lack of education in his communication skills, do you want to do the same? The point is that even someone in a position fo power as the president is, can abuse the language. The object of school is to teach you enough so you DON'T speak like Dubya does at times.

The Internet is the ultimate instrument of freedom and democracy! Many oppressive leaders around the world bang their head in frustration when they try to censer a source of information so vast as the internet. Some even ban the Internet altogether even if it means missing out on becoming a modern nation. That makes it so that nations that want to mordernize will have to "democracize". Its a source of information that is out of full reach of any government. Many injustices in our government that don't get through the media go through our "blogs". The Internet is a wounderful invention that will preserve freedom in america and bring enlightenment to people of oppressed nations.

Maybe. Some people say that AIDS was released by the government as population control.

There are so many things we will never know, so it's kind of futile to speculate.

If you've used Google Earth, you know that a satellite can zoom in from miles above the earth. The government can see everything we do.

The internet was originally designed for fast military communications.

It just slowly fell into normal citizen's domain and was eventually commercialized.

Now its for mass communication on a global scale... shame that people are still too close-minded to accept other people and their opinions on touchy subjects

It was called ARPA net and was designed for military, universities and NASA to communicate faster and more effectively.

But capitalism has made it what it is today.
