"It doesn't matter how little or how hard you are working, as long as you are doing what's expected of you." -Anton LaVey. I like this one because it really opened my eyes to how my family perceives adn expects me to be.
"No one can make you feel inferior without your permission." -Eleanor Roosevelt. This is one of my favorites, because it made me realize exactly how you must take on adversity and insult.
"I myself am a secret." -Joyce Carol Oates.
She is one of my favorite American authors, and this one showed me exactly what kind of person i wanted to become in a strange, vicarious sort of way.

I've got a couple I like. This first one pertains to the Civil War strictly.
"They do not know what they say. If it comes to a conflict of arms, the war will last at least four years. northern politicians do not appreciate the determination and pluck of the South, and Southern politicians do not appreciate the numbers, resources, and patient perseverance of the North. Both sides forget that we are all Americans. I foresee that the country will have to pass through a terrible ordeal, a necessary expiation, perhaps, for our national sins." - Robert E. Lee
To me it's a bit of an insight into the views of the politicians of both sides of the then upcoming war. It's like Lee is saying that politicians in both saw each other as being a push over. He was also rather prophetic. People on both sides were saying that all it would take was one major battle and the war would be over. That was 1861 before the First Battle of Bull Run (Manassas). But it wasn't until 1865 that the war ended, at least four years after the war started just as Lee had predicted.
This second quote I chose for my high school senior year yearbook.
"Fame is the echo of actions, resounding them to the world, save that the echo repeats only the last art, but fame relates all, and often more than all." - Thomas Fuller
For me this says that it's not who we are that makes us famous but what we do. We don't even have to be world famous either, we can just be famous locally.

Can I pick two?
The first:
" Love is not dependency, idolization, sentimentality, craving or physical attraction. Human relationships based on these attributes are strained and ready to break apart at any moment. Genuine love does not start with emotion. It begins with a state of consciousness, of clear awareness, of a deep understanding of both the self and the other person. Then, the emotions arising from this are legitimate, natural fruit. Tenderness and affection are among them. When you really love another, there is no disturbance whatsoever. The other person can be nice or un-nice, take you or leave you. Your love does not depend upon them behaving the way you want; there are no conditions attached. Whatever happens, you are unaffected and unafraid. Love has no selfish desire. You love another not because you want something from her, but because it is the very nature of the true self to love. Don’t think this is all sentimentality. This is the answer."
I don't know who said it, someone e-mailed it to me once several years ago. I like it because so many people talk about unconditional love, yet cannot love another person if that love is not returned. The reality of what unconditional love means is often overlooked, and very hard to apply in real life.
The second:
"The most important things are the hardest things to say. They are the things you get ashamed of because words diminish your feelings - words shrink things that seem timeless when they are in your head to no more than living size when they are brought out. " - Steven King
Not being understood is one of the hardest parts of life. We want so bad for our loved ones to share the same experiences and feelings we share. The things that are important to us, are not important to every one. This is also a difficult lesson to learn and accept.
