Spit

A spit is a finglerlike ridge of sediment that extends out beyond the beach into the ocean. This is a result of the final deposition of the sand from longshore drifts. Where the direction of the shore turns inland (reenters) the longshore current spreads out or dissipates. No longer able to carry the full load, much of the sediment is dropped. This causes a bar to build out from the shore, eventually becoming a spit.

It is like a bar or a beach that is formed by moving sand along the coast.

I think they are needle shaped natural prominotries (headlands) A good example of this is Portland Bill, and Chesil Bank in Dorset.

www.googleearth.com for a closer look.

Good luck with the Project.
