Consult a lawyer and find out what the law says in your state/country. Also, reread your employee handbook (if you have one). Depending on where you are and what you signed when you were hired, they probably do not have a right to tell you what you can and cannot do outside of work. (Contacting him while you are at work is probably not a good idea regardless).

Your job can not dictate your life. So if your employer is telling you BS like this then yes it is VERY wrong of them to! If I was you I'd start looking for a new job. You say you can't afford to lose it but maybe in the meantime look for something else. What kind of company is this?? They are not the government nor law makers of America so they need to quit with that junk! You have rights as a citizen of the USA and of employment better look into their rules, laws or whatever also. Good luck hun!

YES they can fire you for anything, however it would be the stupidest thing they could do as it would be a glaring sign of guilt on their part. You can be fired for anything, or nothing. Even for being a woman or old, young etc, all it means is you have the right to sue for discrimination in those cases. But firing people who brought a lawsuit on, that's a lawyers dream.

Depends on what state you live in - however, most states have a "right to work" law that mean - they can fire you for no reason whatsoever, as long as they do not discriminate against a person for say their race, religion, age, etc.
However, given your situation that your company is in a lawsuit with a former employee, who happens to be your boyfriend - they can instruct not to speak with him regarding his lawsuit. They may think you will give him "insider" information that they are going to use against him in court - even if you don't know anything - they are just trying to protect their interest in the lawsuit.
So, as rule, if they hire you, they can fire you - for reason other than as stated above about discrimination in most states.
Google your State

The law that people are talking about when they say yes you can be filed for any reason other than your membership in a protected class (such as race, gender, religion) is called "employment at will", not a "right to work" state. A right to work state has to do with whether or not you are required to join a union if you work in a shop that has a union.

You're employer has no right in meddling in your affairs, but I know a few who are malicious and vindictive.
I've had friends not support me because the bosses rants and raves to them. These co-worker friends just want to protect their job security.
Please take this to the labor board or EEOC and report your employers for your protection against defamation of character.
By the way, I hope that boss gets what he deserves. A swift kick in the butt. Don't let dictators in the office control you on your personal life. They are not friends even if they claim to be.
Support your boyfriend. Perhaps you can start looking for another job.
Good luck!

it depends on where you work and your position in the company. it is possible. See if you can look in your company handbook or contact someone who can tell you more about company policies. It is possible that they can do it because of a sort of conflict of interest. I know that in a certain instance a member of the company i work for got terminated because of embezzlement and they were Friends of one of the people in management and they were forbidden to have contact with the one who was terminated because the would have lost their job. However, the position I am in i have never heard of any of the sort.... so it all depends

Do you live in Australia? if so ring the AWA hotline. There are ads on TV for it. Dob the company in and they'll get in trouble. it is wrong for them to take charge of your life but hey if they fire you you'll win a law suit too!

That's ridiculous ! No, they can't forbid you to see him when you're not at work. (Unless maybe you're in the military, CIA, FBI, or the likes)
Unless you're in a strong union, they can fire you for just about anything. But even unions aren't much help anymore.
If you want to keep your job, I'd just not mention him again at work. If they ask you questions about him, just answer "I don't know" or "I'd rather not talk about him" and leave it at that.
