I am going to Richmond soon for a concert. The concert is downtown and I just want to know how safe the area is?

Depends what part of downtown. A lot of downtown Richmond is quite dangerous, especially after dark. But if you are going to a concert at the Coliseum, you should be fine, assuming you park in the parking garage right across from the main entrance, and don't stick around too long after the concert.
If it's a smaller venue, like one of the clubs close to the canal, again it's not too bad an area, but I wouldn't recommend walking alone at night (especially for females).

Basically during the day you are fine in pretty much any part of Richmond, but stay out of the inner city at night, especially if you don't know the area well.

As with all cities, there are good areas and bad areas. Most of the concerts are held either at the bars and clubs located in the Shockoe Bottom/Shockoe Slip area, or at the Colosseum. Those areas are night club areas and are not too bad. South of the river, it looks funky because it's an industrial area. But, it really isn't that bad unless you head further south.

Good luck and have fun in Richmond!
