Roaches are attracted to food, and grease. You don't necessarily have to have a dirty house, for them to come in. If you live in a low valley area, you are more apt to have problems with roaches, than someone who lives at a higher elevation.
I have found also, that if you have neighbors who are not very clean, the roaches that you found in your house, could have started out in your neighbor's house, or could have hitched a ride on or in furniture or boxes that you brought into your house.
Be sure to keep food off the kitchen counters, and make sure that your stove and/or your kitchen counters and the tops of your kitchen cabinets are free of grease.
Keep food that is normally stored out of your fridge in plastic bags or containers, if the area you live in has a higher than average roach problem.
Everything I noted above I learned from experience. I hope I have given you some ideas about what you can do about a roach problem.

Wherever you find humans, you will find roaches. A lot of people prefer to say they have WATERBUGS. These are actually GERMAN COCKROACHES.
They search for food and water, just like other living creatures.
They can vector (carry & transmit) some horriffic diseases, due in part to the fact that they will often feed on various kinds of fecal matter.
Calling a professional exterminator is my best suggestion, and THE SOONER, THE BETTER.
They tend to come out at night, so if you see any in the daytime, it is a sure sign you have a heavy infestation. They get behind walls, carpet, etc.
Call a professional exterminator and plan to spend time away while the place is being made habitable again.
I sincerely hope this helps.

There are several types of roaches. Here in Georgia we have one called a Palmetto bug. They are quite large and are found outdoors. Sometimes they get in through whatever opening they can find. The one you have to be concerned about is the German cockroach. They multiply quickly and like living in your house. You can be very clean and still have them just by bringing them home in the groceries, and yes, if you have neighbors that have an infestation some will likely make it into your home. Control is a numbers game. Kill as many of them as you can before they can reproduce. You'll most likely never get rid of every single one, but you can come close. I have recommended a product called Bengal ( like the tiger) to several people who have asked this question. I have purchased it at both Ace hardware and Kroger supermarket. It costs about $8 per can. Follow the directions and you will kick butt.

Bags of wood chips used for pet hamsters can bring them in. These chips are stored in bins where roaches can get in and get packed in process. Also, stepping on a roach somewhere else that has tiny babies riding on its back could bring some home without you knowing about it till they grow. I had a problem with them, called exterminator. For 150 bucks he put a small amount of bait in several areas that the roaches love to eat, but they cannot ingest. It kills them, and then the other roaches eat not only the bait but also their own dead and spreads the poison that way also, it quickly killed the population. The price also included a followup visit, and that did the trick. I haven't seen one since.

Actually roaches like clean areas.
If your husband is eating by the desk and there are crumbs etc around the area it will attract roaches.
You have not stated what area you reside in.
If it is in the south or in a city area in which there is a roach problem, it is almost impossible to keep them out of your house.
The best you can do is control them.
Call in a pest control company.
Good Luck.

It's a world wide problem.Roaches usually come after food that's been left out.Best way I've found is to spray right round outside of house, and underneath house with a suitable insecticide. You can also get roach traps from your local garden center.

Haved you brought any boxes into the house used for packing or storing things? They can come in from the woods if you live close and they can get into the brown paper grocery bags.

WELL IT DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU ARE DIRTY IF YOU ARE NOT. BUT THEYCAN COME FROM ANY WHERE, AND ALL IT TAKES IS ONE TO STOW AWAY WITH ONE OF YOUR VISITORS AND THEN YOU ARE IN FOR IT. AS LONG AS THE ONES YOU SEEN YOU KILLED AND THEN YOU SHOULD BE OK. ALSO IF YOU LIVE IN AN APARTMENT THEY CAN COME FROM YOUR NEIGHBORS, OR WHEREEVER THEY ARE NOT THAT UNCOMMON. IF YOU FEEL BETTER CALL A PEST CONTROL AND HAVE THE HOUSE SPRAYED AND THEN YOU WILL NOT HAVE TO WORRY ANY MORE, GOOD LUCK
